Honestly, half these fees feel like someone’s playing mortgage bingo—just tossing in random words and hoping nobody notices.

Here’s my quick checklist for weird fees: 1) Ask for a line-item breakdown. 2) Google the fee name—sometimes it’s just made up. 3) Compare quotes from at least two other lenders. If it still smells fishy, push back or walk. No shame in calling out fluff.

Couldn’t agree more about the “mortgage bingo” feeling—some of those line items are just baffling. I’d add that it’s worth checking if any fees are duplicated under different names. I once caught a “processing fee” and an “administrative fee” that were basically the same thing. Also, don’t be afraid to ask if a fee is actually required by law or just a lender add-on. Sometimes they’ll drop it if you push back a bit.

I get where you’re coming from, but sometimes those “duplicate” fees aren’t quite as shady as they look. I’ve seen lenders break out costs for compliance reasons, even if it feels redundant. Still, I agree—if something looks fishy, always ask. But every now and then, there’s a legit reason buried in the fine print... frustrating, but true.

That’s fair, but I still get skeptical when I see “processing” and “administration” fees stacked together. Once had a lender try to charge me for “document delivery” *and* “courier service”—same thing, different label. Sometimes it’s legit, but sometimes it’s just creative accounting. I always push back and ask for a breakdown. If they can’t explain it clearly, that’s my red flag.

Honestly, I’ve had lenders tack on a “site inspection” fee when nobody ever set foot on the property. When I asked about it, they just mumbled something about standard procedure. If I can’t get a straight answer, I start looking elsewhere.
