I get where you’re coming from, but I do think age still plays a role, even if it’s not the only factor. When I went through the mortgage process for the first time last year, I noticed my parents (in their late 60s) were way more hesitant about the digital stuff than I was. They kept asking if it was “safe” to upload things online or if they needed to double-check with someone before e-signing anything. I’m not saying younger people don’t get tripped up—trust me, I had my own moments of confusion—but there’s an extra layer of anxiety for some seniors around tech and security that can slow things down.

That being said, I agree that the lack of standardization is a nightmare for everyone. Switching between three different lender portals just to upload pay stubs and tax returns almost made me lose it. Maybe we’re all just at the mercy of outdated systems, regardless of age... but for some folks, especially older ones who aren’t as comfortable with tech, it really does seem like a bigger hurdle.

I hear you on the tech anxiety—my dad once tried to fax a selfie to his loan officer because he thought it was “more secure.” Age definitely adds a layer, especially when every portal looks like it was designed in 2003. I do think lenders could do a better job with clearer instructions and maybe even offer a “human help” button for folks who’d rather talk than click. At the end of the day, everyone’s just trying to avoid accidentally sending their W-2s to the void... or worse, their neighbor’s email.

You nailed it with that—some of these lender sites seriously look like they haven’t been updated since dial-up. I’ve refinanced twice in the last decade and each time I’m shocked by how clunky the process still is. I agree, clearer instructions would help, but honestly, nothing beats having an actual person to talk to when things get weird. Tech is great until you’re stuck wondering if your tax forms just vanished into cyberspace.

That about sums up my last attempt at a reverse mortgage application. I don’t know what it is with these portals—they make uploading docs feel like a game of roulette. You’d think with all the senior-focused loans out there, someone would’ve invested in a more user-friendly system by now.

Honestly, when dealing with mortgages for folks 62+, I always tell people to pick lenders who still answer the phone. The tech is nice when it works, but half the time I end up calling anyway just to confirm they got everything. It’s not just about age either—anyone can get tripped up by these old-school interfaces.

One tip: keep a folder on your computer with all your docs ready to go, and double-check every upload. If you get a confirmation email, save that too. It’s a pain, but it beats chasing lost paperwork later.
