Why does getting a bigger mortgage have to be so complicated?

I tried going the fintech route last year, thinking it’d be less of a hassle, but honestly? They still wanted to see every random transfer in my account. I had to explain a $25 split for movie tickets with my sister—felt ridiculous. The process was faster, but the questions were just as nitpicky. Has anyone actually found a lender that doesn’t get hung up on every little thing, or is this just how it goes now?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I think this is just the new normal. Lenders are hyper-cautious now, especially with all the fraud and money laundering stuff going on. I tried a local credit union thinking they’d be more chill, but nope—same deal, just slower. It’s annoying, but I’d rather they ask too many questions than miss something important and mess up my approval. If you want less scrutiny, maybe stick to bigger banks? But even then, it’s all about the paper trail these days...

Honestly, I felt like I was auditioning for a secret agent role when they wanted receipts for my $18 coffee habit. The level of detail is wild. I remember having to explain a Venmo from my mom labeled “pizza”—like, sorry, I’m not running a crime syndicate, just eating carbs. It’s a pain, but yeah, I guess they’re just covering their bases. Still, sometimes I wonder if they’re just bored and want to see how many times I order takeout...

It’s wild they care about every $10 transaction but barely blink at the giant numbers involved in the mortgage itself. I get that they want to make sure you’re not hiding debt, but at some point it feels more like micromanaging than protecting anyone. Does anyone know if other countries are this intense about personal spending when you’re applying for a loan? Or is this just a weird thing we do here?

I’ve wondered about this too. Like, they’ll grill me over a $12 Venmo for “dog food” but don’t seem fazed by the fact that I’m about to owe them six figures for the next 30 years. I get wanting to check for hidden loans or whatever, but it does feel like overkill. My friend in Canada said their process was way less nitpicky—just basic proof of income and down payment. Maybe we’re just extra paranoid here?
