Why does getting a bigger mortgage have to be so complicated?

Honestly, reading this makes me feel a little better about the ridiculous hoops I’m jumping through right now. I’m in the middle of my first mortgage process and it’s wild how detailed they get. The amount of paperwork is just... next level. I had to explain a $60 Venmo from a friend for concert tickets, and the lender wanted an actual screenshot of our text convo confirming it wasn’t a loan or gift. Felt like being interrogated over nothing.

The part about warning people before they send you money is so true. My mom sent me a couple hundred bucks for “housewarming” and I had to get her to write a whole letter about it—she thought I was joking at first. It’s like, how do people even buy houses if every random transfer trips an alarm? I get that they’re trying to prevent fraud, but sometimes it just feels like busywork for the sake of it.

That “Mortgage Nonsense” folder idea is gold. I’m definitely stealing that because right now my desktop is chaos—random docs everywhere, half-named files, screenshots mixed with memes... not great when you need to find that one bank statement from six months ago.

It’s reassuring to hear this isn’t just some weird fluke with my lender and that everyone’s dealing with the same mess. Doesn’t make it less annoying, but at least I don’t feel singled out. At this rate, if they ask for proof of what I had for breakfast last Tuesday, I’ll just send them my grocery receipts and call it a day.

Hang in there too—it sounds like you’ve been through this enough times to know there’s light at the end. Here’s hoping we all survive the “prove your existence” phase and actually get our keys without having to submit DNA samples next time around.

The whole “prove every dollar” thing is wild, right? I remember having to explain a $25 PayPal from my sister for splitting pizza and it felt so over the top. Did you find your lender was picky about stuff like side gigs or freelance payments too? Mine wanted a paper trail for every random deposit, even if it was just selling old furniture. Makes me wonder if anyone’s ever had a smooth mortgage process or if this is just the new normal...

Yeah, I hear you. When I refinanced last year, they flagged every Venmo and Zelle transfer, even ones labeled “birthday gift” from my mom. Here’s what I ran into:

- Had to dig up receipts for selling an old bike on Facebook Marketplace.
- Side hustle deposits? Needed invoices, contracts, the works.
- Even my tax refund got questioned because it was a “large deposit.”

Feels like they’re just looking for reasons to slow things down. Did anyone actually get through this without a million follow-up emails? Or is this just how it goes now with every lender?

Honestly, the hoops they make you jump through now are wild. I get why lenders want to see every dollar, but at some point it feels like overkill. I had a lender ask for a signed letter from my brother just to explain a $300 PayPal transfer—like, really? It’s not like I’m laundering money with birthday cash.

I do wonder if this is partly a reaction to all the regulatory changes after 2008. Lenders are so terrified of missing something, they flag everything that isn’t a W-2 deposit. But then again, there’s got to be a better way to separate genuine income from random personal transfers without dragging out the process for weeks.

Has anyone noticed if credit unions or smaller banks are any more reasonable about this stuff? Or is it just as bad across the board now?

- It’s nuts, right? I’ve had to explain Venmo transfers for pizza nights—like, who’s laundering $40 at a time?
- In my experience, smaller banks *sometimes* cut you a bit more slack, but it really depends on the loan officer.
- The big lenders are definitely worse about nitpicking every deposit.
- Curious if anyone’s actually had a smoother ride with online lenders or fintechs? Or is it just a different flavor of headache?
