Did you know housing counselors can help with credit issues too?

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing—some counselors are just way more on the ball than others. I had one who basically just read off a checklist, and another who actually dug into my credit report and explained what was dragging it down. Made me realize it’s not just about having a counselor, but finding one who actually listens. Has anyone had luck finding someone good through a nonprofit, or is it mostly trial and error? I’m always a bit wary of getting stuck with someone who’s just going through the motions...

Honestly, it’s a total mixed bag. I’ve had a nonprofit counselor who was super sharp—she actually spotted an error on my report I’d missed for years. But yeah, I’ve also had the “checklist reader” type. Sometimes feels like roulette, but when you get a good one, it makes a difference.

- Had a similar experience—one counselor actually walked me through a dispute that bumped my score up 20 points.
- On the flip side, another just handed me a generic pamphlet and called it a day.
- Honestly, I wish there was a way to know which counselors are actually going to dig in and help.

Curious—did anyone here ever have a counselor help with a refi specifically? Or is it mostly just credit repair stuff?

I’ve actually had a counselor help me sort through a refi once, but it was kind of a mixed bag. She was super knowledgeable about the paperwork and what to watch out for with fees, but when it came to the actual lender options, she just pointed me to a list and said “do your research.” Not exactly hand-holding, but still better than nothing. I do think most of them focus on credit repair, though—at least in my experience. It’s weird how much it depends on who you get... almost like picking a doctor or mechanic.

I actually had a different experience—my counselor was way more hands-on with lender options. She even walked me through pros and cons for each one, which helped narrow things down. Maybe it’s just luck of the draw, but I wouldn’t say they all focus mainly on credit repair.
