I’ve seen buyers skip the inspection to save a few bucks, then get blindsided by stuff like old wiring or leaky pipes.

Right? I always tell folks, the VA appraisal is just making sure the place meets minimum standards and is worth what you’re paying—definitely not a deep dive. I once bought a place that “passed” the appraisal, but the inspector found a squirrel condo in the attic. That $400 inspection saved me thousands and a lot of headaches. Skipping it’s just not worth the gamble, even if you’re handy.

VA loans don’t actually require a full home inspection—just the VA appraisal, which is pretty basic. But honestly, skipping an inspection is risky. I’ve seen folks regret it later when hidden issues pop up. That $400-500 upfront can save a ton of stress down the road.

- VA only wants an appraisal, not a full-blown inspection.
- That appraisal? It’s mostly about making sure the place isn’t falling over and meets minimum standards.

Couldn’t agree more. My cousin skipped the inspection and found out the “bonus room” was more like a “bonus mold habitat.”
- $400-500 stings, but surprise repairs sting way worse.
- TL;DR: Not required, but skipping it is like playing home-buying roulette.

That $400-500 for an inspection feels like a punch to the gut at first, but honestly, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what you could end up paying if something’s wrong. The appraisal is just a checklist to make sure the house meets basic safety and livability standards. It won’t tell you if the pipes are about to burst or if there’s hidden water damage behind the walls. I’ve seen too many folks skip it and regret it later—just not worth the gamble, in my opinion. Would you rather know up front, or get blindsided down the road?

Couldn’t agree more. The appraisal just scratches the surface. I learned that the hard way—skipped an inspection once, ended up with a busted sewer line two months in. That $400 would’ve saved me thousands. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.
