I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve found that calling the lender doesn’t always clear things up. Once, I spent half an hour on hold just to get a vague answer about a “processing fee.” Sometimes I think they make it confusing on purpose... I usually end up triple-checking the statement myself before even bothering to call.

Yeah, I hear you—those statements can be a maze. Here’s how I usually tackle it: First, I check the itemized charges and compare them to last month’s. If something new pops up, like a random “processing fee,” I’ll Google the term and see if it’s standard or just some creative label. If it still doesn’t add up, I’ll email the lender instead of calling—written responses seem to get more concrete answers, plus you’ve got a paper trail. Not perfect, but it saves me from sitting on hold forever.

Honestly, I’ve had to deal with those weird “miscellaneous” charges too. Last year, my statement had a $12 “document handling fee” out of nowhere. I double-checked my old statements—never saw it before. I skipped the call and just sent a quick email, like you said. Took them a few days, but they actually refunded it. I don’t trust those random fees... always worth checking line by line, even if it’s tedious.

I totally get the “cryptic crossword” vibe—sometimes I feel like I need a decoder ring just to read my mortgage statement. I’ve been refinancing, and you’d think that would simplify things, but honestly, it’s just more paperwork and even more random fees popping up.

Here’s how I handle it:
1. I keep a running spreadsheet with every monthly charge, so if something new shows up, it sticks out right away.
2. If I see anything weird, I pull up last year’s statements for comparison (like you did).
3. I always screenshot or save any emails I send about charges, just in case I need proof later.

One thing I’ve wondered—has anyone tried asking their lender for a full fee schedule? I did, and they sent me this massive PDF, but it actually helped me spot a couple of “one-time” fees that weren’t supposed to recur (spoiler: they did). Curious if anyone else has gotten a straight answer from their lender about what’s actually legit and what’s just… creative accounting?

I’ve actually requested a fee schedule before and, yeah, it was a monster of a document—half of it looked like legalese. But it did help me catch a “processing” fee that was quietly recurring. When I flagged it, my lender reversed the extra charges, but only after some back-and-forth. It’s wild how much you have to double-check these things... sometimes I wonder if they’re hoping people just won’t notice.
