“the lender kept circling back to her visa status like it was some huge red flag.”
Man, I hear you. When we bought our place, my wife was still on her green card and you’d think we were trying to buy the White House with how many times they asked for proof of everything short of our blood type. I get that banks want to cover their butts, but sometimes it feels like they’re just making it harder for anyone who doesn’t fit their checklist.
Honestly, I’m not convinced all this extra paperwork is about “safety.” Feels more like a way to weed people out, or at least slow them down until they give up. I mean, if you’ve got a steady job and a good credit score, what’s the big deal? The irony is, half the folks I know who got in trouble with mortgages were born and raised here.
I guess the system’s just slow to catch up with how life actually works now. If you can survive the paperwork gauntlet, you deserve a medal... or at least a lower interest rate.
