I get why people like local brokers, but honestly, I’ve had better luck going straight to the big companies. The main thing for me is transparency—when I’ve used brokers, sometimes I felt like I wasn’t seeing all the options, just the ones they had deals with. Plus, the bigger companies usually have more online tools to compare coverage details side by side. It’s not perfect, but at least I can dig into the fine print myself. Still, I’ll admit, those local folks do catch some weird loopholes... guess it depends how much you want to DIY.

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but I’ve actually had the opposite experience a couple times. The big company sites are slick, but I’ve found their “compare” tools aren’t always apples-to-apples—like, some tiny detail in the deductible or exclusions gets buried. One time my local broker pointed out a coverage gap I totally missed online. Makes me wonder if there’s stuff I’m not seeing when I go fully DIY... maybe it’s just about how much you trust your own research vs. someone else’s expertise?

That’s a really fair point. I’ve seen people get tripped up by the fine print—especially around things like water damage or personal property limits. Online tools are convenient, but they don’t always flag those little differences that can matter a lot in a claim. I tend to err on the side of caution and double-check with someone who knows the local market, even if it means spending a bit more time. Peace of mind is worth it for me, but I get why some folks prefer to handle it themselves.

I totally get what you mean about peace of mind. I’m a first-timer, so I keep worrying I’ll miss something in the “fine print” like you mentioned.

Did you find it made a big difference talking to someone local? I’ve been debating whether it’s worth sitting down with an agent or just sticking to online quotes.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. I’m all about saving money, so I started with the online quotes too. They’re quick, but there were a couple of things I missed that only came up when I actually talked to an agent—stuff like water backup coverage or some weird exclusions. It was a bit of a pain to schedule, but I think it saved me some headaches down the line. If you’re really tight on budget, maybe just do one sit-down and use that info to compare the online stuff... That’s what worked for me, anyway.
