How Do You Shop Around For Home Insurance - Or Do You Just Stick With The Same Company?
I totally get that - paperwork just makes my eyes glaze over. I’ve switched insurance companies a couple times, mostly because my lender made me shop around during refi. It’s wild how the quotes can jump around for basically the same coverage. Do you stick with the same agent every time, or do you try out new ones when your policy’s up?
I've noticed the same thing with quotes - sometimes there's just no rhyme or reason for the price swings. I usually tell folks to check with a couple different agents, but honestly, some people swear by sticking with one who knows their situation inside out. Have you ever had an agent actually find you a better deal without you asking, or do you always have to nudge them? Sometimes I wonder if loyalty really pays off in this industry...

Here’s my “refi shuffle” approach, since I just went through this circus last year:
Step 1: Gather all your current info. I mean, dig up the declarations page, jot down what you’re paying, and any weird stuff about your house (old roof, trampoline, pet iguana... you know the drill).
Step 2: Check with at least three agents. I used one “loyalty” guy, one online quote thing, and then a wildcard local agency. It’s wild how much they can vary - one wanted $500 more for basically the same thing.
Step 3: Wait and see who calls you back with some “secret” deal. In my experience? The only time my regular agent found me a better deal was when I literally told him I was shopping around. Otherwise, he just kind of shrugged and renewed me.
Step 4: Don’t be afraid to switch. I used to think loyalty counted for something, but honestly, I think it just makes you easy to ignore. If there’s a better price, I’m out.
I still wonder if there’s some magic handshake for getting those “loyalty discounts,” but so far... not seeing it.
You nailed it - shopping around is the only way I’ve ever found real savings. I’ve never had an agent proactively lower my rate, either. Loyalty just isn’t rewarded in this business, at least not in my experience. It’s a hassle, but every time I check with a few different agencies, I end up saving hundreds. The “loyalty discount” feels more like a marketing line than anything real. Stick with what works for your wallet.
I hear you on the “loyalty discount” - I stuck with one company for years thinking I was getting a deal, only to find out I’d been overpaying compared to neighbors. Ever try using an independent broker, or do you just call around yourself?
