Why does getting a bigger mortgage have to be so complicated?

Yeah, it’s gotten pretty intense. When we bought our last place, I had to explain a $50 Venmo from my brother—turns out he was just paying me back for pizza. Felt ridiculous at the time, but I get why they’re so strict now. Still, it’s a headache.

I get what you’re saying about the whole process feeling a bit over-the-top, but honestly, I’m kind of relieved they dig so deep sometimes. When I refinanced last year, I had to walk them through a random $120 transfer from my cousin. It felt invasive at first, but after thinking about it, I realized the lenders are just covering their bases. The last thing I’d want is to get approved for a loan I can’t actually afford, or worse, get caught up in some mess because of a weird transaction I didn’t even remember.

Here’s how I try to look at it:
1. Keep a running list of any money coming in or out that isn’t a normal paycheck or bill. Even if it’s just a dinner split or a birthday gift, I jot it down.
2. When they ask for explanations, I already have the details ready. Makes it a lot less stressful than digging through months of bank statements trying to remember what that $73 was for.
3. I keep my personal and “house stuff” accounts separate. That way, only relevant transactions show up when I’m dealing with mortgage stuff. It’s more work up front, but it saves a ton of headaches.

I get that it feels like overkill for something as small as pizza money, but with all the financial scams and identity theft going around, I’d rather they ask too many questions than not enough. Plus, if anything weird ever did pop up, at least someone’s paying attention. Still, it can be a pain when you’re in the thick of it, especially if you’re juggling a bunch of other life stuff at the same time.

Sometimes I wonder if there’s a more streamlined way they could do this without so much back and forth... but until then, I guess I’d rather deal with the hassle than risk something slipping through the cracks.

I hear you—it’s a hassle, but your system is solid. I used to think it was just bureaucracy for the sake of it, but after a buddy got caught up in a fraud mess, I get why they’re so picky. It’s annoying, but at least you know nothing’s slipping through the cracks. I do wish there was less paperwork though... feels like half my life is just explaining Venmo transfers these days.

Honestly, I feel your pain—sometimes I joke that I spend more time chasing down bank statements than actually helping people buy houses. The Venmo thing cracks me up... like, yeah, that $12 was for pizza, not a secret offshore account. But after seeing some real horror stories with fraud, I get why the underwriters are so nosy. Still, if they ever invent a paperwork robot, sign me up.

The Venmo thing gets me every time… I mean, are they really worried about my $8 coffee split? I get that fraud is a thing, but does it really help to make us dig up every tiny transaction? Sometimes I wonder if there’s a simpler way. Anyone ever had a refi where it *wasn’t* a paperwork marathon?
