Timing really does make a difference, but I’ve seen some managers stick to their guns no matter what.

“If you’re flexible on move-in dates, you’ve got more power than you think.”
That’s true, but sometimes even flexibility doesn’t get you much if the building’s in high demand. Curious—has anyone actually managed to get a fee waived or a free month lately? I’ve had mixed results, especially with the bigger management companies. Smaller landlords seem more open to negotiation in my experience.

I hear you—flexibility only gets you so far, especially with those big companies. I’ve tried to negotiate for a free month a couple times and got nowhere. Smaller landlords, though, they’re usually more willing to talk if you catch them at the right moment. Ever notice how it’s almost like a game of chicken with some of these managers?
