I hear you on the smart lock headaches. Had a client who moved in, super excited about their new place, only to realize the WiFi was down and their lock wouldn’t budge—first day after closing, no less. Ended up crawling through a window just to get inside. I’m all for tech upgrades, but sometimes simple is just... safer. Out of curiosity, has anyone found a smart lock brand that’s actually reliable for long-term use? Or are they all kind of hit-or-miss?
I’ve definitely had my doubts about smart locks, especially after seeing a neighbor get locked out during a power outage. She was standing in her driveway with groceries, just staring at her phone, hoping the app would magically work. Not exactly the peace of mind you want after moving in. I get the appeal—no more fumbling for keys, remote access, all that—but when WiFi or batteries fail, it’s a hassle.
I did a lot of research before buying and ended up sticking with a basic deadbolt paired with a keypad lock. It’s not as flashy, but it’s never let me down. Some of the higher-end brands like Schlage or Yale seem to get decent reviews for reliability, but even then, I noticed complaints about connectivity or battery life. For me, the risk of being locked out just isn’t worth it, especially when you’re trying to keep costs down after closing on a house. Maybe I’m just old-school, but sometimes simple really is safer... and cheaper in the long run.
