I get the logic behind asking for random references, but honestly, I feel like even that can be hit or miss. Some people just aren’t great at keeping in touch with past clients, especially if they’re newer.

About experience—funny you mention it. I’ve noticed the same thing:

I’ve met some newer folks who were way more attentive than the “veterans.”
Sometimes the “old pros” seem checked out, while the newbies are hustling hard. I’d rather have someone who actually listens than just someone with a long resume.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’d still take a “checked out” veteran over someone who’s never actually closed a deal. Listening is great, but there’s a lot of stuff you only learn the hard way in this business. Sometimes experience saves your bacon when things go sideways.

I get the appeal of a seasoned pro, but I’ve seen “veteran” agents who are just going through the motions, too. Sometimes they’re so set in their ways that they miss stuff or don’t really hustle for you. I’d rather have someone hungry and sharp—even if they’re newer—than a big name who’s half checked out.

Honestly, I’ve had clients burned by both types. The rookie who didn’t know how to negotiate, and the old-timer who just phoned it in. Experience is great, but if they’re not actually listening or adapting to what you need, it doesn’t matter much.

Guess it comes down to attitude and work ethic more than just years in the game. I’d take someone who’s genuinely invested in my deal over someone just coasting on their resume... even if that means rolling the dice on someone less “proven.”

Couldn’t agree more with this:

Experience is great, but if they’re not actually listening or adapting to what you need, it doesn’t matter much.
I just bought my first place and honestly, I went with a newer agent who was super responsive and actually seemed to care. Some of my friends thought I was nuts for not picking the “top producer,” but he just felt tired and rushed when we met. The hustle and willingness to actually answer my million questions made all the difference. I’d rather have someone invested—even if they’re still learning—than someone who’s just coasting.

Honestly, I think you nailed it. That gut feeling when someone’s actually listening is huge. I’ve seen “top producers” who just treat you like a number. Sometimes the newer folks are hungrier and way more attentive. You probably dodged a bullet.
