That’s so real. I remember trying to explain a $40 PayPal from my sister—she was just paying me back for movie tickets, but the underwriter wanted a whole paper trail. I get that they’re protecting against fraud, but sometimes it feels like you need a forensic accountant just to buy a house. Keeping receipts and screenshots is honestly the only way I stayed sane. It’s wild how much scrutiny even the smallest gifts get.

- 100% agree, the paper trail is no joke.
- I had to explain a $25 Venmo from my mom—just for groceries. Underwriter flagged it as a “potential gift.”
- Best advice: keep a folder (digital or paper) with every bank statement, screenshot, and note about where money came from.
- It’s tedious, but it saved me headaches when they circled back months later.
- Honestly, I get why they’re strict, but it does feel over the top for small stuff.
- If you’re using disability income, be ready for even more documentation. They’ll want award letters, deposit proof, sometimes even letters from Social Security.
- Not fun, but being over-prepared is the only way I got through it.

That part cracks me up, because I’ve been there—had to justify a $40 transfer from my brother for splitting pizza. It’s wild what gets flagged. The folder trick is solid. I keep a spreadsheet now, just so I can remember what all the random deposits were for. Not sure it should be *this* complicated, but here we are...

Honestly, I thought I was being paranoid by tracking every little thing, but it sounds like that's just survival mode with these underwriters. The level of scrutiny is wild—like, do they really think $25 from my mom is some kind of secret down payment? Makes me wonder if anyone’s had issues with disability payments or SSI deposits getting flagged too. That seems like it could get messy fast.

I get what you’re saying about the paranoia, but I actually think the spreadsheet thing is a bit much unless your deposits are super complicated. I’ve gone through FHA underwriting twice now (once with SSI involved), and both times they just wanted a letter of explanation for anything that wasn’t a regular payroll deposit. Like, if my mom sent me $25, I just wrote, “Gift from mom for groceries”—that was it. They didn’t even ask for her bank statement or anything.

With SSI, as long as the deposit matches what’s on your award letter, it’s usually fine. The only time it got messy for me was when my SSI payment changed mid-process and I had to update the paperwork. But honestly, I think underwriters are just covering their bases because of all the fraud out there. It’s annoying, but not always as intense as it seems at first. Maybe it depends on the lender? Or maybe I just got lucky...
