Honestly, I thought I was organized until the mortgage process came along and exposed all my weaknesses. My “system” was a mix of sticky notes, random PDFs, and a folder on my desktop called “MORTGAGE STUFF (FINAL)”—which, spoiler, was not final. There’s always that one document you swear you attached, but it’s just... gone. Like it evaporated into the mortgage ether.

I tried scanning everything into one app, but then I’d forget which app. Or I’d take a photo of something and then lose it in the sea of cat pics on my phone. At this point, I’m convinced the only real solution is to accept a certain level of chaos and just hope nothing super important gets lost in the shuffle. Maybe some people have color-coded binders and spreadsheets, but for me? It’s more like organized confusion.

It’s wild how the mortgage process manages to find every gap in our “systems.” I’ve seen people with spreadsheets and labeled folders still get tripped up when a lender asks for something obscure, like a bank statement from two years ago. One thing that helps some folks is using a single cloud folder (Google Drive, Dropbox, whatever you like) and just dumping everything there—even if it’s messy, at least it’s all in one spot. The color-coded binder crowd seems mythical to me too… but hey, as long as you eventually find what you need, that’s a win in my book.
