Interesting you ended up splitting the cost...did you ever question whether you really needed to move the fence at all? If it had been there for decades, wouldn't adverse possession or some kind of grandfather clause come into play? I get wanting to keep neighborly peace, but sometimes these things aren't as clear-cut as they seem. Curious if you explored other options before deciding to move it.

I mean, adverse possession sounds great in theory, but have you ever actually tried explaining that to a neighbor over the fence line? Awkward doesn't even begin to cover it. Did you check with a lawyer first, or was it more of a "let's just keep the peace and split the bill" kinda thing? Curious how much hassle you were willing to endure before deciding it wasn't worth the headache...

We went through something similar when refinancing our place. Initially, I thought, "how complicated could it really be?" Famous last words, right? After a few awkward fence-side chats with neighbors who were convinced their flowerbeds were sacred territory, we ended up consulting a lawyer just to be safe. Honestly, the peace-of-mind was worth the costβ€”splitting bills informally sounds great until someone moves out and the new neighbor isn't so chill about it...

True, but I've seen plenty of cases where surveys didn't fully solve boundary drama. Sometimes neighbors just ignore official lines anyway... had a friend whose neighbor kept parking a boat halfway across the line. Paperwork only goes so far.
