how would you handle surprise home repair costs?
Okay, so imagine this: you finally saved up enough cash to redo your backyard patio, you're all excited, and then bam - your furnace decides it's done with life. Suddenly, your patio fund is looking like emergency furnace money. I'm curious how other folks deal with these surprise home repairs. Do you keep a separate emergency stash, or just wing it and hope for the best?

I've been there - had a similar situation last winter when my water heater decided to retire early. Learned the hard way that winging it isn't ideal. What I usually recommend (and try to follow myself) is setting aside a separate emergency fund, even if it's just a little each month. It feels annoying at first, but trust me, when your furnace or roof decides to throw a tantrum, you'll thank yourself later...and maybe still get that patio done eventually.
