Title: Does a VA loan require an inspection? What are the VA loan inspection requirements for buyers and spouses?

That’s spot on about the difference between the VA appraisal and a full inspection. The appraisal just checks if the place meets minimum property requirements and is basically safe, but it won’t catch hidden issues. I’ve seen folks assume the VA process covers everything, only to get hit with expensive repairs later. Spending a little extra on an independent inspection upfront can save a lot of headaches - trust me, it’s worth it for the peace of mind alone.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I skipped the independent inspection on my last VA loan and didn’t regret it. The place was newer, and the VA appraisal flagged a couple things anyway. Not saying it’s for everyone, but sometimes that extra cost just isn’t necessary if you know what you’re looking at.

I get where you’re coming from, especially with newer homes. Still, I’ve seen a few surprises pop up even in places that looked spotless on the surface. The VA appraisal checks for minimum property standards, but it’s not as thorough as a full inspection. For some folks, skipping it works out fine, but I’d say it’s a bit of a gamble unless you’re really confident in what you’re seeing.

I totally get the urge to skip the inspection and save a few bucks - trust me, my wallet cries every time I see another “optional” fee. But like you said,

“I’ve seen a few surprises pop up even in places that looked spotless on the surface.”
That’s my nightmare right there... You think you’re moving into a dream home and then BAM, mystery leak or haunted attic (okay, maybe not haunted, but you get me). The VA appraisal is decent for basics, but I’d rather pay now than find out later my “bargain” home comes with free indoor waterfalls. Anyone else feel like they need a crystal ball when house shopping?

I hear you on the “optional” fees - sometimes it feels like there’s a fee for just breathing during the homebuying process. The thing with VA loans is, the appraisal’s really just to make sure the place meets minimum property standards and is worth what you’re paying. It’s not a deep dive into all the nooks and crannies. I’ve seen folks skip the inspection and then face some pretty hefty repair bills a few months later... Have you ever had a surprise repair pop up after moving in, or do you tend to play it safe and get everything checked?
