But like you said, sometimes it just means living with plastic sheeting and exposed studs for way too long. Personally, I’d rather plan for a slightly bigger buffer than I think I’ll need and try to wrap up one area at a time. Surprises are pretty much guaranteed either way, but at least you’re not risking the whole house (and your credit) in one go.

Couldn’t agree more - remodeling always seems to come with “surprise” expenses, like your house is playing a prank on you. I’ve seen folks try to do everything at once and end up with a kitchen that’s just a fridge and dreams for months. Your approach of finishing one area before moving on is solid. A little buffer in the budget never hurts, either... unless it turns into a new patio set you didn’t plan for.

Seriously, that’s exactly how it feels. I thought I’d mapped out every possible cost for our bathroom update, but once the walls came down, surprise - ancient plumbing. Couldn’t agree more - remodeling is basically a game of “what’s hiding behind this wall?” I always tell folks: whatever you think it’ll cost, add 20%. Your future self will thank you when the pipes start looking medieval.

Couldn’t have put it better. I’ve seen “quick” kitchen upgrades balloon because of ancient wiring or random plumbing surprises. People always underestimate the domino effect - touch one thing, three more need fixing. That 20% buffer? Sometimes isn’t enough if your place is older than your parents.
