Sometimes I feel like there’s always something lurking behind the drywall...

That’s definitely a concern, especially with older homes. When I refinanced to fund our remodel, I made sure to build in a contingency for exactly this reason. It’s not just about what you can see—those “invisible” fixes can drain your budget fast if you’re not prepared. I’d recommend having a thorough inspection before starting, even if it costs a bit more upfront. It’s stressful, but catching issues early usually saves money (and headaches) in the long run.

No kidding. I swear, every time I watch a home reno show, someone finds a “mystery pipe” or ancient wiring that looks like it belongs in a museum. When you did your inspection, did they actually catch any of those hidden problems? Or did stuff still pop up mid-demo? Trying to figure out if the extra inspection is worth it or if I’m just paying for more stress...

Honestly, I’ve wondered the same. We paid for a “thorough” inspection, but once demo started, there were still surprises—old plumbing behind the walls, random wires, you name it. Did anyone here actually avoid those mid-reno headaches with a more detailed inspection, or is it just luck of the draw?

I’m with you—paid extra for a “comprehensive” inspection, but once we opened up the kitchen, there was knob-and-tube wiring hiding behind drywall. I guess you can’t X-ray the walls. Maybe it helps a bit, but I’m not convinced it’s ever foolproof.

Yeah, that’s the thing—no matter how “comprehensive” the inspection, there’s always something hiding. We thought we’d covered our bases, but found old plumbing behind the bathroom wall. Inspections help, but luck’s a big part of it.
