Honestly, you nailed it with the Murphy’s Law fund. I used to think people were exaggerating about old house costs, but after a few years in my 70s-era place, I’m convinced it’s just part of the deal—no matter where you live. First year, we got hit with a surprise sewer line issue, then a mystery leak in the attic... and the inspector didn’t catch either one. It stings at first, but budgeting for those random fixes really does help take the stress down a notch.

Totally agree about Texas foundations being their own beast. The shifting soil here is wild compared to what my cousin deals with up north. But honestly, some of the “surprises” are just part of having a home with character. I’d rather deal with the occasional headache than live in a cookie-cutter new build, but I get why some folks feel differently.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Most fixes aren’t as scary as they seem once you’ve got a little cushion set aside. Just feels better knowing you’re ready for whatever pops up.
