I hear you on the upload bar drama—last time I refinanced, I swear the “processing” wheel was mocking me. The first round, I did everything in person, and my kitchen table looked like a tornado hit an office supply store. At least with the digital process, I don’t have to worry about coffee stains on the tax returns.

But honestly, there’s always something. Last time, one of my PDFs wouldn’t open for the loan officer, and we spent an hour troubleshooting only to realize their firewall was blocking it. Paper or pixels, there’s no such thing as a smooth refi—just different kinds of headaches. I will say, having a local contact who actually picks up the phone made a difference for me when things got weird. Not sure if that’s still common these days or just luck.

Anyway, at this point I just keep all my docs in a folder labeled “mortgage chaos” because it fits.

That “mortgage chaos” folder is a mood. I’m right in the thick of my first refi and honestly, it’s like assembling IKEA furniture—looks straightforward, but somehow there are always leftover screws. I’ve been making a checklist for every document, double-naming files (just in case), and still, my lender managed to lose my W-2 twice. I agree about having someone local. When my online portal glitched, I called their office and someone actually answered, which felt like winning the lottery. Digital is supposed to be easier, but sometimes I wonder if a stack of paper would be less stressful... at least you can see it all in one place.

Honestly, I hear this a lot. The promise of “paperless” is great until you’re chasing down missing PDFs and re-uploading tax docs for the third time. Double-checking with a local office—especially when tech fails—can save you a ton of headaches. Just don’t assume digital is always more efficient; sometimes old-school works better.

That rings true for me. I refinanced last year and thought going digital would be a breeze—upload, sign, done. Instead, I spent hours digging through email threads and portal logins trying to find the “right” version of my pay stubs. At one point, the lender’s system glitched and lost half my documents, so I had to resend everything. Honestly, having a physical folder on my desk would’ve saved me a lot of back-and-forth.

I get the appeal of paperless, but it’s not always the time-saver people expect. There’s something to be said for walking into a local office and handing over a stack of papers. At least then you know it’s in their hands. Digital’s great when it works, but when it doesn’t, you’re stuck waiting for tech support or hoping someone responds to your email. Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes a little “old-school” is worth the peace of mind.

That’s a fair point, but I’ve seen digital actually streamline things—if you set up your files ahead of time. Here’s what I usually suggest: create a dedicated folder on your computer for all refi docs, label everything clearly (like “2023_W2” or “BankStatement_March”), and keep a backup on a flash drive or cloud. That way, even if the lender’s portal glitches, you’re not scrambling to find the right version. Sure, tech hiccups happen, but with a little prep, digital can save you from the paper shuffle and lost docs too.
