That “courier fee” is classic—makes you wonder if someone’s just pocketing lunch money. I see those random charges all the time, and honestly, half of them are negotiable or just plain nonsense. Comparing estimates side by side is smart; it’s wild how much fluff gets added in. I always tell folks: if a fee sounds weird, ask about it. Sometimes they’ll drop it just because you noticed. Prepayment penalties are sneaky too—seen more than a few people get tripped up there. Glad you caught it and got your payment down... that monthly “found money” feeling never gets old.

I hear you on the “fluff”—

if a fee sounds weird, ask about it. Sometimes they’ll drop it just because you noticed.
—but I’ve actually had a few lenders stand their ground on some of those random charges. Maybe depends on the market or the company? I tried pushing back on a doc prep fee last year and got nowhere. Curious if anyone’s ever had luck with the bigger line items, like underwriting or appraisal? Those seem less flexible in my experience, but maybe I just got unlucky.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing—some fees are just glued to the loan no matter how much you push. In my experience:

- Doc prep and underwriting? Usually non-negotiable, especially with bigger banks.
- Appraisal fees are almost always set by third parties, so zero wiggle room there.
- Title or “processing” fees sometimes have a little give, but not much.

Had one lender drop a “courier fee” after I called it out as nonsense, but that’s about it. Seems like the more standardized the fee, the less likely they’ll budge. Maybe smaller credit unions or brokers have more flexibility, but big lenders play it by the book.

Yeah, the “courier fee” is classic—had that pop up on one of my refis too. Here’s what’s worked for me: I always ask for a full fee breakdown upfront, then go line by line. Sometimes you can get a “processing” or “admin” fee trimmed, especially with local lenders or brokers. Big banks? Not so much. I’ve found credit unions a bit more open to negotiation, but even then, some fees are just locked in. It’s wild how much varies depending on who you’re dealing with.
