Are You Paying More on Your Mortgage Than You Need To?

That’s wild - $600 for paperwork? I’m just starting to look at mortgage options and those random fees make me nervous. I keep seeing “origination fee” and “underwriting fee” too, and honestly, I can’t always tell what’s legit and what’s just tacked on. Has anyone ever tried pushing back on those, or is it just the processing fee that’s negotiable? I’m worried I’ll miss something and end up overpaying.

I hear you - those fees can feel like a game of “find the hidden charge.” I remember my first mortgage, I stared at the closing disclosure like it was written in ancient Greek. Origination and underwriting fees are pretty standard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t question them. I’ve seen lenders shave off a few hundred bucks just because someone asked. Processing fees, courier fees, even “document prep”... sometimes they’re negotiable, sometimes not. It never hurts to ask, and if something looks weird or redundant, call it out. Worst case, they say no. Best case, you save some cash for pizza on moving day.

Been there. If you want to cut costs, here’s a quick checklist: 1) Compare your Loan Estimate and Closing Disclosure line by line. 2) Flag anything that changed or looks off. 3) Ask about every fee - sometimes “processing” or “courier” is just padding. 4) Shop around for title insurance and homeowners insurance; you’re not locked into the lender’s pick. It’s tedious, but I’ve seen folks save hundreds just by double-checking those details.

Yep, those “miscellaneous” fees can be sneaky. I’ve had lenders try to slip in a $150 “email fee” once - like, what, are they using carrier pigeons? Also, don’t be afraid to push back on the title company your lender suggests. I’ve saved a few hundred just by calling around. It’s not glamorous, but those little wins add up over time.

That’s wild. I’ve seen “document prep” fees that were literally just someone hitting print. You’re right about shopping around for title services - most folks don’t realize you can do that. It’s not always a huge savings, but every bit helps. Just gotta watch for the stuff that doesn’t make sense and ask questions. Sometimes they’ll drop a fee if you push back, sometimes not... but it’s worth trying.
