Is buying new worth the hit, or better to grab used and save?

"New doesn't always mean reliable, sometimes simpler older models just last longer...and they're easier to fix."

Couldn't agree more with this point. A lot of newer appliances are packed with electronics and fancy features that, honestly, most of us rarely use. When something breaks, you're stuck calling a technician because it's impossible to DIY fix without specialized tools or software.

I've seen plenty of clients who've stretched their budgets thin buying brand-new appliances for their homes, only to face costly repairs within a couple of years. On the flip side, I've also had clients who went the refurbished or gently-used route and ended up with reliable machines that lasted ages. My own washer and dryer set was bought second-hand about 7 years agoβ€”still going strong, and when something minor goes wrong, I can usually handle it myself.

Bottom line: if you're comfortable doing a bit of research and maybe some minor repairs down the road, used or refurbished can be a smart move financially and practically.

Fair points all around, but I'm wondering...doesn't it depend a lot on what appliance we're talking about? With something like a fridge, is it riskier going used because of hidden issues or energy efficiency concerns down the line?

Bought a used fridge once...worked fine for about three months, then started humming louder than my neighbor's lawn mower. Ended up costing almost as much in repairs as buying new. Lesson learnedβ€”some things are worth the extra cash.

Had a similar experience with a washer once, but honestly, I've bought plenty of used stuff that's still running great. Trick is being super picky about who you're buying from...and maybe dragging along someone who knows appliances better than you do.

I've had decent luck with used stuff too, but honestly, for appliances that see heavy daily useβ€”like washers or dishwashersβ€”I still lean toward buying new. Even if you're careful about who you buy from, there's always that nagging uncertainty about hidden wear and tear. Plus, newer models usually come with better energy efficiency and warranty coverage, which can save you money and headaches down the line. Just my two cents though...I've been burned once or twice by trying to save a buck!
