That hits home. When we bought in 2021, we got outbid by investors three times—one even offered *above* asking and waived inspection. We wrote heartfelt letters, included a photo of our dog, the whole nine yards. Honestly, it felt like all the personal touches were just for our own sanity. I’m with you, banning corporate buyers won’t solve every issue, but it might at least give regular folks a fighting chance. The market’s just been wild.

I hear you on the idea that banning corporate buyers won’t solve everything. It’s a tempting thought, but the market’s got more moving parts than my old lawnmower (which, by the way, also refuses to cooperate). Even if you keep big investors out, you’ve still got folks with family money or people moving from higher-cost cities who can drop cash like it’s Monopoly money. The competition’s just fierce all around.

That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing some guardrails in place. Maybe something that gives first-time buyers or owner-occupiers a leg up—like longer listing periods before investors can swoop in? Or even tax incentives for selling to people who actually want to live in the house instead of renting it out as an Airbnb. Not saying it’d fix everything overnight, but right now it feels like regular buyers are bringing a butter knife to a sword fight.

At the end of the day, I’m not holding my breath for any one policy to magically make things fair. But if there’s one thing this market has taught me, it’s that persistence (and maybe a sense of humor) is key. And possibly a willingness to write letters to houses themselves: “Dear charming bungalow, please pick us...”

That “butter knife to a sword fight” line sums it up. I remember thinking we’d have a shot if we just wrote the right letter or baked some cookies, but the cash offers always seemed to win out anyway. You’re right—it’s not just corporations, there are so many angles. Still, sticking with it and keeping your sense of humor really does help. Sometimes persistence pays off, even if it takes longer than you’d hoped.
