So I recently took over a mortgage from the previous homeowner, thinking it'd be a smooth ride. But now I'm hearing mixed things about liability issues and stuff. Um, anyone else done this and had surprises pop up later?

Yeah, I've been there—assuming a mortgage can seem straightforward, but sometimes hidden liens or unpaid taxes pop up later. It's always smart to run a thorough title search beforehand...hopefully you did that already?
