How I Figured Out How Much Faster I Could Pay Off My Mortgage

Honestly, I’ve definitely had those moments where I wondered if I was just shuffling money around for the sake of it. It’s easy to get caught up in spreadsheets and forget the whole point was to have less debt, not just more charts. When it came to investing vs. paying down the mortgage, I’d run the numbers, but sometimes my gut would win out—peace of mind is worth something too, right? There were a couple times I put a bonus toward the mortgage and later wished I’d saved it for a vacation or something fun, but seeing that balance drop was its own kind of reward. Life throws curveballs, but I try not to beat myself up if plans change.

Totally get where you’re coming from—sometimes it feels like you’re just moving numbers around and not really getting anywhere. I think it’s smart to balance the math with what actually feels right for you. There’s something satisfying about seeing that mortgage number drop, even if it means skipping a splurge now and then. I’ve had moments where I wondered if I should’ve used extra cash for something more “fun,” but honestly, the peace of mind from less debt is hard to beat. Plans change, and that’s normal... you’re doing great just by being intentional about it.

- Been there, honestly. Watching that principal shrink is weirdly motivating, even if it means putting off some stuff you want.
- I used to think I’d regret not taking more vacations, but the freedom from debt hits different. It’s not flashy, but it’s solid.
- Plans definitely shift over time. Sometimes you need to throw the spreadsheet out and just do what makes sense for your life right now.
- You’re making progress, even when it feels slow. That intentionality pays off down the road.

Right? I swear, seeing that number drop is better than most reality TV. But sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out by not just taking a break and splurging a little. Anyone else ever get tempted to just say “forget it” and book the trip anyway, or does the guilt win every time?

Honestly, I get it. There’s something weirdly addictive about watching the balance shrink. But yeah, I’ve definitely had those moments where I look at flight deals and think, “Mortgage can wait one month, right?” Usually the guilt wins out, but every now and then... that vacation just looks too good to pass up.
