My old computer's finally biting the dust, and I'm torn between getting a laptop for portability (coffee shops, couch surfing, you know...) or a desktop for better performance and easier upgrades. What do you guys prefer and why?

Been there myself recently—it's tough weighing portability against performance. I'd say first list out your daily tasks clearly, then see if a laptop can comfortably handle them. Desktops are safer long-term, but laptops sure are convenient... Good luck deciding!

Went through this myself a year ago. Ended up going laptop because I needed to meet clients on the go, but honestly, if you're mostly stationary, desktop's probably the smarter choice. Easier upgrades, better cooling, and usually more bang for your buck. If portability isn't a must-have, I'd lean desktop... but if you're always hopping between places, laptop convenience is hard to beat. Just my two cents from experience.
