I totally get what you mean about it depending on the team. When I was shopping around, I tried both a big-name bank and one of those newer online lenders. The bank had a rep who barely answered emails, but the app-based lender actually called me back within an hour when I had a question about pre-approval docs. Made me wonder if it’s less about tech vs. traditional and more about who’s actually handling your file. Did anyone else run into issues with communication, or was it just me being impatient?

Honestly, you’re not alone—communication is all over the place in this business. I’ve seen clients get ghosted by “top” banks, then have some random credit union respond at 9pm on a Saturday... go figure. I always say, it’s less about the company name and more about who’s picking up your file that day. Maybe we all just want someone to answer an email before we retire, right?

- Had the same thing happen during my refi last year—big-name bank left me hanging for days, then a tiny local lender actually called me back on a Sunday.
- Learned pretty quickly that it’s really about the loan officer, not the logo.
- I’d say, responsiveness beat fancy apps or marketing every time for me.
- Funny how you end up trusting the person who just answers your questions, even if their office is in some strip mall...

It’s wild how the “fancy” banks can make you feel like you’re applying for a secret society, while the strip mall lender just picks up the phone and talks to you like a human. I always tell folks, you’re not marrying the brand—you’re working with a person. Sometimes the best service comes with a squeaky chair and a paper calendar.

That’s a fair point, but I’d argue there’s a tradeoff. The “fancy” banks might feel impersonal, but sometimes their underwriting standards and fraud protections are just more robust. I’ve seen folks get burned by lenders who seemed friendly but missed key details. Did you ever worry about the smaller lender missing something important, or did you feel like you could trust their process?
