Thinking about using escrow—worth it or just extra hassle?

Been looking into escrow accounts lately since I'm planning to buy something pretty pricey online from a seller I don't really know. I've heard they're good for protecting both sides, but honestly, I'm not totally sure how much safer it actually makes things. Anyone here used one before? Did it genuinely help you avoid getting scammed or was it just another annoying step to deal with?

Used escrow a couple times when buying stuff online, and honestly, it did save my butt once. Bought a pretty expensive vintage guitar from a seller I didn't know, and when it arrived, it wasn't exactly as described—had some hidden damage. Escrow gave me leverage to sort things out without losing money. Yeah, it's an extra step and can slow things down a bit, but if you're dropping serious cash...probably worth the peace of mind, right?

I've used escrow a few times myself, and honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Quick thoughts:

- Definitely great for big purchases or when you're dealing with someone you don't know. Had a similar situation buying a rare vinyl record once—seller claimed "mint condition," but it arrived scratched and warped. Escrow let me sort it out without losing cash.
- On the flip side, for smaller or routine transactions, it can feel like unnecessary hassle. Waiting for approvals, confirmations, etc., can slow things down and get annoying.
- Bottom line: if you're spending enough money that losing it would sting, escrow is worth the extra step. Think of it like insurance—annoying to pay for until you actually need it, then you're glad you did.

Just my two cents...

Fair points, but is escrow always the safest bet? I've had situations where escrow complicated things more than it helped—like when a buyer dragged their feet on approving release of funds, causing unnecessary delays. Maybe direct payment methods with built-in buyer protections (like PayPal or credit cards) could offer similar security without the hassle? Curious if others have found escrow to be consistently reliable, or if it's just another layer of bureaucracy...

Escrow can be helpful, but yeah, it does slow things down. When I refinanced my home, escrow added extra steps and paperwork. Still, for a big online purchase from an unknown seller, I'd probably lean toward caution.
