Title: Surprised by how much credit score matters for home loans?

I’ve always wondered about that too - like, is the “credit pull at the finish line” thing just a scare tactic? I know they say don’t buy a car or open a new card, but I’ve seen folks shuffle money between accounts and it’s been fine. Has anyone actually had a lender freak out over something small, like paying off a credit card or moving cash? Sometimes it feels like the rules are stricter in theory than in practice...

I had the same questions when I was buying last year. My lender actually did a soft pull right before closing, and I got super anxious because I’d just paid off a big chunk on one of my cards. Turns out, that didn’t bother them at all - what they really cared about was new debt or big unexplained deposits. Moving money between my own accounts was fine, but they did ask for a paper trail when I transferred a larger amount from savings. It felt like some rules were more about making sure nothing “weird” pops up than nitpicking every little thing.

I was honestly shocked by how much they dig into your finances. I thought my credit score would be the main thing, but it felt like they cared more about any sudden changes or “mystery money.” I got nervous moving money around too, even though it was all mine. The whole process made me double-check every transfer... just in case. It’s wild how much scrutiny there is, but I guess it makes sense from their side.

Yeah, the level of scrutiny really threw me off too. I figured as long as my credit score was solid, I’d be in the clear, but it’s way more detailed than I expected. They definitely want to see stable, traceable funds - makes you paranoid about every transfer, even if it’s just moving money between your own accounts. It’s stressful, but I get why they do it. At the end of the day, they’re just trying to make sure nothing shady’s going on. Still, it’s a lot to keep track of.

Yeah, it’s wild how much more goes into it than just your credit score. I’ve seen folks with great scores get tripped up by things like large deposits or even just moving money around between accounts. Lenders want to see a clear paper trail for every cent, especially with all the anti-fraud regulations these days. It can feel invasive, but they’re really just making sure the funds are legit and not borrowed or gifted without proper documentation. If you know ahead of time what they’ll ask for, it takes some of the sting out - just keep records of transfers and where your money’s coming from. It’s a pain, but it does make sense from their end.
