Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—some fees do sound like they were made up on the spot. But I’ve seen folks get so fee-phobic they end up missing out on good deals just because a legit charge looked weird. Like, title insurance or appraisal fees aren’t glamorous, but they’re not optional either.

“Not every fee is a scam—some really are legit, even if they sound made up.”

Couldn’t agree more with that. Sometimes it’s just about asking for a breakdown and seeing if it makes sense. If the answer is “uhhh... standard processing,” yeah, that’s a red flag. But not every line item is a trap—sometimes it’s just paperwork being paperwork.

That’s the truth. I used to get super paranoid about every single fee, but honestly, some of them are just the cost of doing business. My trick: I make a checklist of all the typical fees (title, appraisal, origination, etc.) and compare them across lenders. If something pops up that’s not on my list, I ask for specifics. If they can’t explain it without mumbling “standard processing,” I walk. It’s not about dodging every charge—it’s about knowing which ones are legit and which ones are just... creative accounting.

Honestly, I still get nervous about the “just paperwork” stuff. Maybe I’m too cautious, but I’ve seen fees sneak in that looked normal until I dug deeper. Here’s what I do:

- Ask for a full breakdown, even if it seems standard.
- Google every fee—sometimes there’s regional stuff or lender-specific charges.
- Double-check with friends who’ve bought recently.

I get that some fees are legit, but I’d rather be the annoying person who asks too many questions than miss something weird. Maybe it’s overkill, but better safe than sorry...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve been side-eyeing every “processing” or “origination” fee like it’s a scam until proven otherwise. It’s not overkill at all—these numbers add up fast, and nobody’s gonna care about your wallet more than you do. I’d rather feel a bit paranoid than get stuck with a surprise charge later.
