Mortgages discussions and local services.
Trying to figure out how much of my house I actually own
"Saved me a bundle, but shows they're still behind the curve sometimes..."
Haha, yep - algorithms are handy but they don't always catch the little neighborhood quirks or recent changes. Always worth chatting with locals or even just taking a stroll around yourself...you'd be surprised what you notice!

Couldn't agree more. Last year, I almost jumped on a property because the online valuation looked amazing. But after walking the neighborhood myself, I noticed a bunch of new construction signs popping up - turns out a big apartment complex was planned nearby. Algorithms totally missed that detail. Saved myself from a potential headache just by being curious enough to check things out firsthand...
That's a great catch. Reminds me of a client I worked with a few years back who fell in love with a home online. Beautiful photos, great price, everything checked out. But when we walked the property, we noticed the neighbor's fence was a good 10 feet into the yard. Turns out there'd been a quiet boundary dispute going on for years. Like you said:

Nothing beats actually getting out there and seeing things firsthand...

Yeah, seeing things firsthand is usually the way to go, but honestly, even then you can still miss stuff. I once bought a place after walking it twice, only to realize later the "charming ivy" was hiding some serious foundation cracks... algorithms aren't the only ones missing details!
Boundary issues can definitely be tricky, even when you're careful. I've seen clients go through similar headaches - it's surprising how often fences aren't actually on the property lines. Good thing you caught it now rather than later... saves a lot of hassle down the road.
