When a fixed rate just won’t cut it: a mortgage adventure

Maybe boring old fixed isn’t so bad if it lets you focus on other stuff... like actually living in your house.

Yeah, I totally get that. I tried the split thing once thinking I was being super clever, but honestly, tracking two rates just made me twitchy. Fixed might be “boring,” but at least you know what’s coming out every month. Sometimes peace of mind wins out over chasing a maybe-slightly-better deal.

Fixed is definitely the “set it and forget it” option, and honestly, a lot of people sleep better that way. I’ve seen folks get caught up in the variable vs split debate and just end up stressed. Sometimes boring is underrated, you know?

Couldn’t agree more - boring can be a lifesaver. I once had a client who loved the thrill of chasing variable rates. Every RBA announcement was like a mini heart attack for them. After a year of wild swings, they switched to fixed and told me it was the best sleep they’d had in ages. Sometimes, peace of mind really is worth more than shaving off that extra 0.1%.

That’s honestly the bit most people forget when they’re crunching numbers. Chasing the lowest rate can feel like a game, but living with that uncertainty - especially if you’re not wired for it - can be exhausting. Fixed rates might seem “boring,” but there’s real value in knowing exactly what’s coming each month. Not everyone needs the adrenaline rush of rate changes, right? Sometimes boring just means you get to focus on life, not your mortgage.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. I used to obsess over every decimal point, thinking I was “winning” by getting the lowest rate. But after a few sleepless nights worrying about what the next rate hike would do to my budget, I realized boring isn’t so bad. There’s something underrated about just knowing what you owe, month after month. Maybe it’s not exciting, but it sure beats the stress.
